Different exhaust temperatures from right to left?

Postby Johnnymac » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:51 am

Guys, I have been learning more and more about my 72 Combat as I dig into it. I recently installed the Dual 32mm PWK's from Jim Schmidt. Through trial and error, I think that I'm almost here with the tuning, but I noticed last evening as I was syncing the carbs and swapping jets that the exhaust temp on the left exhaust is hotter than the right? Is this normal? If not, what would be the cause of this?

Left might be a little lean, right may be a little rich.

Left side hotter or right side cooler? Perspective! How are the plugs looking?

FWIW Mine are not set up the same left to right. The needle clip position is differant and the pilot jets are 35 and 40.

Are you running a balance tube? This does not effect on down the road running so much, but you can really dial in the idle with it.

If your head is not fresh, it could be valve guides. Just sayin.

Could be a half a dozen other things I suppose.

Number values on the EGT please and what rpm or throttle opening you are monitoring. How do you know which temp is too hi or too low?

Leaness first comes to mind along the lines of chrome header bluing but so can over rich if still burning inside of header. Ignition timing too hi or low also affects the temps but I ass-eum you have a wasted spark hitting the same on each side.
There can be up to 15% less spark intensity/power on plug side that electrons are forced to jump from the hook to the center electrode which takes more energy to do than other way across the gap. Sales pitch and tests say should be non issue.
Must always fine tune with new-ish plugs or hope that's not a factor too.

I'm not familiar with Jim Carbs but carbs have float levels that set base line for the rest of the jetting so check or fudge that to fine tune the mixture readings.

Worse case of course is a cam lobe is wearing low.
Throw yourself at the ground and miss!

Compression test to see if both sides are somewhat equal. Carbon build up in one combustion chamber? Start with the easy/simple/less costly first--then proceed down the list. Make a list of the suggestions/possibilities listed.

Well, Jim Schmidt is the man. I explained to him what I was experiencing and he asked me to check the cables..... Well, wouldn't you know, somehow, when I was adjusting the jets, I managed to not securely attach the cable to the slide....and apparently, when that isn't connected, things don't work correctly. :-) Needlestosay, (and embaraasingly so) my exhaust temps are now the same.

Thank you all for your advice. I really feel like an idiot...but live and learn. I am an IT professional by trade.... So this issue is the equivalent of me asking a computer user who is experiencing problems if his computer is plugged in. Haha.
