could LAB start a 2nd forum ?

Postby lynxnsu » Fri Sep 03, 2010 3:32 am

I am getting more and more pissed off by all the non-technical blablabla on this forum .I understand that some people enjoy showing their builds or buys but I for one could not care less.
When I found this forum I thought it was about Commandos ,how to build and maintain and modifie them but it look like it is becoming a place for old man to show their toys off...
Perhaps there is a place for both by way of splitting the forum.
Before youy all start telling me that if I do not like it I can leave ...well thats what I am doing already .I look once a week or even less and that is a shame because it used to be fun and educational
Sorry if I am upsetting some of you This is not the reason for writing this

I'm not sure how we would separate technical from non-technical. It's all the same thing to me and seeing a picture of some old man's toy might generate a technical idea or two, same as when you walk around a Norton meet and see how other others solved problems.

(I'd rather see the commercials disappear from the threads.)

I've been a member of many internet forums and I can say this one is as well behaved as any of them. If you're looking for a "strictly technical" board without personal content I wouldn't join - it'd be boring as hell.

The britbike board has some forums that tend to be more technical. Some are not strictly Norton but are still interesting.

Sometimes, reading how an issue was resolved on another British, or even European or Japanese bike can lead to some insight on how to solve your Commando problem.

I, for one, prefer to filter through the non-technical stuff to find what interests me.

If this site developed enough traffic for it (say, 2000 active members) I could see a further split in boards.

Apology accepted on my part. I read the post's that seem interesting. Gerbrand, you probably will be back as this is very good Forum. Hard to avoid if you're a Norton enthusiast. I have to urinate now.

I really enjoy how this forum is set up and the fact it is basically all commando is really nice. As far as not having anything personal in the content, very BORING. The personalities are what make a forum a little more interesting especially when it is not a face to face affair and as an enthusiast, I like being able to converse, [personal and technical issues after a horrible day at work, makes life good again. I think it kind of gives a person a feel of who you are writing responses. This place, by being mainly commando also keeps the strays out like on the britbike forum or a few of the others you get BSA, Triumph guys piping in on norton issues, etc, etc. If a person does not like anything personal and wants strictly technical I don't think they are going to find it anywhere, but the closet place to uptight and stuffy I've run across is the INOA list on yahoo, now there you'll get all the technical you want and about zero personality, only pictures, video when it is posted in the files section and you don't even have to get email at home. I quit using that list years ago because it was not to my liking. So except for the general top five boys who want to run the show all the time that may be an option for lynxnsu. Then again if you are sick of a great place like this you probably aren't going to find what you are looking for unless you start your own gig. People try it all the time.

Old men! Why, you whipper-snapper, I'll show you a couple of toys!

(just kidding of course)

Sounds to me like you should start the kind of threads you want to see. There are plenty of people here who have the technical genius to join in. Then you don't have to read the board, just check your posts.

I have suggested a new sub-forum or two since I joined (member project section would be good, I think. Maybe a photo section also), but have gotten used to the format since then.

In fact, there only used to be 3 sections in the entire forum, so it's now tripled in scope.

Isn't this how it is now? Pure tech would not be so fun in my opinion and there may be only two new threads a day. You have to weed through the fodder on most forums anyway.

I don't see it. As the others have mentioned, this is a great forum and it seems to me that the focus stays pretty much on the technical aspects of Commandos

I have always learned a lot by getting in on a good bullshit session. Technical articles can only go so far. I think a little mix is great. Jim

Actually the kill button thread IS technically based, or so I would argue since it seems to have an impact on the performance of your bike! The dead goats, well I dunno, but I have learned some great tid-bits from the strangest places in this forum and some of them saved me time, mistakes and money. I can't ask for more than that. Well, a beer and a barmaid could be involved...
