Buyer Beware

Postby B+Bogus » Fri Jan 20, 2012 10:30 am

Evilbay strikes again (well, not their fault actually)
There's a 750 Combat with a Quaife box just went through, but it's a bit light on numbers (frame, engine).
Typical

That's the one - I'm the timewaster who also wasted a few gallons of diesel to discover this rare gem didn't have any numbers.

The problem with buying a bike with no numbers is it may be stolen or what?

As it states in the ebay ad., the engine has been rebuilt into 850 cases (look like late 750 type to me?) the crankcases may be new items therefore there wouldn't be any serial number.

There's a registration document (V5) and that will have the original frame and (last known) engine number recorded on it, so all anyone would need is a set of number stamps (and a hammer) to make it "legal".

Something else to consider: the DVLA are currently reissuing all registration documents in red because a batch of green ones went missing a while ago.

The discussion regarding the 'Quaife' box was also quite interesting...apparently there was the problem with the 4th/5th gear dogs which would need sorting. I suspect that if I'd fiddled with the gear lever I may not have found as many as I was hoping/expecting...I didn't bother to check; not after spotting the remarkably shiny new paint on the headstock, anyway.

Meanwhile - I'm desperately looking for a Commando to rebuild for BEARS racing this year - if anyone knows of any (preferably in the UK) please let me know. Anything from a (legit :P ) version of the above to a Seeley would be fine

Yes, well...the DVLA shouldn't really tell porkies like that in order to justify the introduction of the new document, which after all, was a planned upgrade because certain details on the form had to be updated.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Bu ... /DG_189329

One change being that the document now very clearly states that it is not proof of ownership (which of course it never was) and (more importantly to the DVLA) the declaration regarding vehicle scrapping had to be updated as the laws regarding the dismantling and scrapping of vehicles has changed. Section 6 [S] Re: Personal breaking up of a vehicle for scrap declaration of the old V5C had to be removed as it is no longer legal to personally scrap a vehicle.

porkies Noun. Lies, from the rhyming slang pork-pies.

I drove over a 1000 mile to turn a MK2a down only to find my current prize 20 mile away. Strongly advise against buying site unseen.
Nortons, when they're right, they're righteous!
72 Commando Combat Roadster
Frame 149xxx,
Crankcase 210XXX
Gearbox 235xxx
and they all "match" up perfectly.

There was a number on the cases, but nothing the NOC would recognise... Looked like it had been chiselled in with a broken screwdriver blade.

Perhaps someone could persuade the vendor to put up some pictures... I don't think I'd be the right guy though
