Best inexpensive Tires for 1972 Tiger 650???

Postby Mark Cigainero » Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:28 am

I need new tires on the old Triumph. It is not a daily rider--Just weekends on the street mainly with a little off road. Any good ideas on fairly cheap good tires for the front and rear?? Thanks Mark Cigainero

I put a set of Cheng-shin tires on a 67' Yamaha YR1 last year. They worked well, likely better than anything that was on the market 30-40 years ago. The YR1 was completely stock, with under-damped suspension so pushing these cheap tires beyond their limit would not have been easy.

That said, If I'd spent some time setting up the front end and added decent shocks to the rear, I would have installed Avon AM26s as I use on my Commando...

I have had good luck with the Chen Shin and they have the Dunlop K70 tread pattern available too.

Cheng Shin's used to be leathal in the rain . Didnt like old Continetals either, = Flying lessons under hard cornering .

The K-70s are excellent hoon tyres on chipseal and off road ,
but for scrapeing the door handles round bends (road raceing ! oops ) the K-81s are in another class .

Probly best to get something modern , theve improved a lot.
Old Perrilli Dirt Track tyres were like Licquice on tarmac,
but dirt cheap. Were before Goodyear raceing off road things,
with real raceing carcasses ,
Lot of Kiwis used 4.7 Yokohama Nobblies on the back with a ribbed front.
A few , anyway , who enjoyed Drifting !
Possible to drag things on these , but theres safer ways.

A bit like helmets , Not realy worth comprimiseing on rubber.
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .
