Just got my bike teleported as my Avatar.
I'm so happy
Took someone at work 1/2 my age to show me how to do it

I know how you feel, the first time I tried mine turned out huge, a full size pic, L.A.B. PM'd me to down size my avatar pic. After a few tries I got it right.

I had to open a photobucket account for free from their site, download any photo you have of your bike from your hard drive to the account.
open the Commando site sign into profile. Copy/paste the url of photo to avatar.
Not the best explanation but thats what my co worker did for me the best I can remember. There is instructions how to do it from Jerry Doe on this site too.
Good Luck get an Avatar and then you feel like a professional contributor on the forum

Avatars are limited, 200 x 200 pixels and 6Kb  So to get a 200 x 200 avatar, you have to reduce the number of colors and increase the compression ratio on a jpeg file to make it smaller. Irfanview is very good at doing these modifications. Getting rid of the clutter in the background helps a lot in getting a smaller file so a little bit of photoshopping (generic term) may be needed.

This picture is 200x200 and approximately 6kb.

With a jpg, cleaning up the background will only make a negligible difference to the file size. As you can see there still is sufficient detail to the picture.
You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

Once an image has been uploaded to Photobucket, it can easily be resized using the Photobucket 'edit' facility.

To resize an image in Photobucket.

Click edit above the selected photo in your album, (which should open the photo with a range of editing tools?).

Click Resize, check Keep Proportions, then use the resize tools to reduce the image size down to 200 x 200 or less.

Click Apply .

Scroll to the bottom of the page and either click Save a copy or Replace original.

Open your User Conrtol Panel, select Edit avatar in the Profile section, then paste the Direct link (not the IMG code) of the resized image into the Link off-site box, then click Submit and if it has been done it correctly, the image should show as your avatar.

[Edit] If the photo was uploaded to Photobucket as a reasonably high resolution image, then it may still be over the 6KiB maximum file size?

3Kb, but I'm not sure if the compression took more out than getting the clutter removed. I know on my image, I wanted a little better resolution and getting the background less cluttereed helped a lot.

WOW! Following these simple instructions even I was able to (finally) have an avatar. Note: please take this picture as the "before" version of my Commando when it was someone's idea of a T120TT. "After" version in progress.
