Atlas and Electrics

Postby britbikemike » Tue Aug 23, 2011 5:54 am

What do I need to gut the electrical system and put a dependable one in her? I saw a Sparx electronic inginition, with coils, and a wiring harness, but is this all I need? I would like to maybe even go so far as to put a halogen in the front of her. I want her to be dependable, well more dependable than a 40 plus year old bike lol.
Traction is kind of like bowel control. Once you think you are going to lose it, it's probably too late!

Whatever works on a Commando will do the job on an Atlas. A good alternator, a Podtronics rectifier / regulator, change to negative ground and use LED lights and a good electronic ignition (Pazon works well, but there are others).

Not necessarily so when it comes to the ignition, if it's a magneto.

You can always go to a Commando timing cover & can, and run modern stuff. I'm sure I've also seen magneto adapters for certain EI systems...

Strip the wireing out of a Hillman Hunter or other pre 74 pommy car . Correct colour codeing. Mk 4 zepher has enough wireing for a space ship . Mostly youl find its all the same stuff and compatible.Normally , being ' indoors ' its mint.
Engine bay stuffs 50/50 . sometimes excellent , sometimes shot.from heat and oil .

These things have millions of connectors and sheaths of various types .
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .

If you have a ‘’ maybe even go so far as to put a halogen in the front’ you should stick to a magneto and keep all the alternator output for the lights. You can now get a 120 whatt output alternator, but technically this will only put out 75% of continuous power.
