Can anyone tell when (year and month) the design of the gearbox assembly has changed?
I was told that MKII bikes have an upgraded gearbox...
And what is the main difference compared to old style one?

Around 2014 and tighter tolerances. One is casted one is machined from solid. Pretty much everything that is in the mkii other than the seat was done between 2014-2015. But almost EVERYTHING from newer bikes will fit older bikes.

Richard or anyone else, do you think the new style gearbox has noticeable advantages compared to the old one? I have repeatedly problems with the gearbox and the fix of last year apparently helped for one year only...
That is why I am considering now to change the whole gearbox assembly.

I needed a new gearbox at 700 plus miles. I got the upgraded one. I don't think its better as sworn by by factory reps as because I can't feel it bottom out at first gear. You can kick down forever and feel the clicking as if it were still downshifting. Also, putting a new box on a bike with a little wear on it took a while for the new tranny to break in. All this said, its still a nice smooth shifting box. No real complaints at all. I still think the original "felt" better. It just didn't "wear" better. Keep in mind, I was still on warranty and it didn't cost me a dime. It just cost me a 7 month wait until someone could actually believe it was defective.

The new CASTED one is better for sure! Also, I’m on my phone so I’ll post a pic later but there is a way to make shifting WAY better Tony. It involves griding off some material on the internal gear selector. And filing off something from the bend on the selector.

I will probably make a manual for this fix.

Interesting. I am amazed at how smooth mine shifts in any gear. Even when I'm fatigued and don't pull the clutch lever all the way.

Hello Raphi , what is the box doing ? What don't you like about it ? A new gearset is going to be a massive cost ! If you just need a new shift drum and forks ? I read a while ago the factory was polishing some parts for easier shifting. Is your bike reluctant to go into gear or is it jumping out of gear under acceleration ? There may only be one or two parts out of spec that need changing and the rest of the box is good..

Gears, esp 5th gear suddenly jumping out and immediately in again. This happens normally around 4500 to 5000 rpm, mustn’t be under acceleration...
Now gearbox sounds not good (whistling). I had exactly the same one year and about 2’200 miles ago! Had to change several damaged parts of the gearbox for more money than the cost of a complete new gearbox then...

May be anybody knows an answer to following question I can’t reply for myself because of two handicaps that is that I am not anglophone and only have limited mechanical knowledge.
Does the complete gear assembly (65 parts) include the backlash gear (19 parts) and crank gear (8 parts)? The latter two seem to have undergone improvements and I got an offer for gear assembly AND backlash gear AND crank gear... I guess that if I order the complete assembly I would not need the other two as well or am I wrong?

Initially, because my bike was jumping out of 5th to 4th at exactly 4600 rpm, the factory thought it was the detent spring. Waited eons, finally got replaced, got on the highway and exactly 4600 rpms, it downshifted to 4th. So no, that was not the problem, but it could be yours. Yours is going back into gear. EDIT. Just noticed your comment about the whistling sound. Had that too. Eventually it was popping out of 4th too. I can't tell you if it can be repaired or not. Like I said, I was fortunate enough to have mine replaced under warranty.

Did you get the old style or an upgraded gearbox under warranty?
Mine was jumping out of 4th too last year. The snap link was torqued and several parts already damaged...

Hello Raphi,

order a complete gearbox a new gasket for the cover and an O-ring for the fifth gear side.
A workshop should be able to change the gearbox complete in 2,5 max 3,5 hours.

Panetone

New style. Again, I don't notice a significant difference. The old one upshifted great and so does the new one. Kind of notchy on the downshifting all the way and doesn't feel to bottom out in first.

Yes, you wrote that... Sorry wasn’t aware anymore.
I think I might just get a ‚new‘ old style gearbox assembly (year 2014) and hope it lives longer.

If you need to replace it, I wouldn't do that. My old one didn't last and neither did yours. I'm not complaining about the new one, I just don't notice any significant difference. I'd go with the one that doesn't break. I have 7k on the new one with no problems. Also, maybe your problem IS the detent spring. Mine just did not happen to be so.

Well, I can get a 2014 gearbox asssembly for a reasonable price while the new one is offered to me for a little fortune...
May be the Cootes can confirm that you can do more than 10k with the old style one?

Fingers crossed it sorts the air box oil scenario. When it goes back to the factory I've also requested they de-cat the exhaust and add loud pipes. Should be fun!

I took the 961 out for a ride tonight. It was awesome. I have a couple of 'quick' bikes, but the Norton makes you appreciate riding on the road slower. So much fun.

Love your last post. Yea. You can put on a 3/4 lid and smell the countryside. Don't forget the remap. You're hooked. Its like riding old school thump which is the niche Norton fills unlike the other sterile retro bikes. Have fun. Load up them miles.

Gearbox change happened mid way through 2014. This is when production changed to the Far East, Taiwan..
