Opinions on the best E start battery in the OEM tray using the e starter? (I already know about all the mods to be done to the system.)

Hi mate, I've got a Deka ETX15 in my MKIIIe. Snug fit in the OEM tray. Bit pricey but plenty of juice.

Motobatt MBTX 14AU
Motobatt website actually advises this battery.
I've been using one a couple of years now, no probs at all.

Loosely installed the battery today, fits OK, turns the starter over like no tomorrow:)
Will see about durability.

Odyssey PC625. On my 3rd or 4th season and has served me very well so far

Jerry, you indicate that you have two 9 ah batteries in parallel giving 18 ah, but it seems that OB is recommending two 18 ah batteries. Am I reading that wrong?

I am not really sure about total amp hours. They are actually 14 AH each. Its a powerful starting system. I think the most important thing is the cable size and a good ground. Its very important to have your back fire device set properly too. Mine needs a re torque. Starter motor spins it when cold, but after the motor warms up, it grabs nicely. I use kicker first time. I am too lazy to take the primary to bits again. Its a pain on the MK3.

Ok, I get it. Two 14 ah batteries. That makes sense. Do they fit in the MK3 tray without mods?
Thanks.

Petejohno can you elaborate ? Stock MK111 alternator-charging or special stuff ? I use Odyssey PC 625 . We know Lithium is much lighter so we need to know more as these batteries are heavy. Charging cycle is different I think...

I've found that I have zero battery problems since installing a 3 phase alternator. The charging system is the real weakness of the MK III E-Start. I've got a Dyno Dave starter and put heavy cables on many years ago; overkill aircraft cable 4, I think, gauge because it's what I had handy when I tossed the original a few decades ago. It's good and flexible so I never bothered to replace it with something lighter.

I run with a halogen headlight on often with lots of low RPM when the tourists are clogging up the town and the sparkbrite monitor is almost always in the green.

I had to modify my battery tray a bit. I made a new mounting bracket that was wider. It was not a big deal

I agree. I did the same thing. Forgot to mention that.

I use a Duracell ultra Pn# CYL10004 East penn makes em. They have been sold under various brand names. Deka is one of those brands. I have a 8 year old Deka, same size, in a Yamaha that still works fine. I use the original Prestolite starter and 4 GA cable. The old relic starts every time.
