Hi all,
Are any of you using the original air filter box? If so, what are you using for the filter element? I note the original? pleated paper element is available from Norvil but wonder if there is something better that utilizes the original box.

Thanks,
Ed

I took the original element and matched it up to a larger K+N pleated filter, I cut the rubber surround off and trimmed the K+N down to the size of the original. It was a real PITA. If there is a direct replacement available, I would go for it.

The wedge filter of the N15 is modified from the Atlas filter - the center of the filter screen is mashed in to clear the Matchless frame. The element is the same

Thanks Bill,
What you did was what I was expecting to have to do. You don't remember a part # for the K&N you cut down?

Ed

Sorry, I can't find the box end. But I seem to remember it was a cabin air filter and very thin - about 1/2-3/4 inch thick pleated filter, maybe 6 x 9 inches.

I bough a pack of RamAir replacement motorcycle air filter
The kit contained a sheet of 15mm thick dual density foam plus a sheet of SS mesh (6mm grid)
I cut a piece of foam to suit plus a piece of mesh to hold the foam against the housing's perforated metal
Photos below should explain
Cheers
Rob

That looks like a nice kit, robs ss, but it is still a PITA to get the air box On/Off an Atlas (doing so usually results in scratching paint somewhere). I gave up long ago, and have been running velocity stacks for most of the past 55 years.

The task of removing / replacing the air box would be easier with the short (about 1/2") manifolds. Mine are the long version, about 1" wide.

I agree slick
I no longer intend to fit the stock filter - just nice to have it
I'm building a box/plenum from 3mm bakelite sheet, similar shape to stock filter but thinner. this will fit over the ends of the bellmouths
A stub at the rear/centre of the box/plenum will allow fitment of a reasonably large K&N filter (similar to photo below) which will be hidden between the oil tank and battery box
Sorry Ed if you feel this could hijack your thread but I think it is relevant as an alternative to stock
Anyone else done something like this?
Cheers
Rob

Can you fit this with a 1 inch carb manifold or do you need the ½ inch one?

Good question, Bernhard. I would think not with the 1 inch manifold.

Thank you all, Slick, Rob and Glen. I do want an original functioning filter for authentic aesthetics but the filter Glen linked to looks excellent for daily use.

Thanks again,
Ed

digging out my generator (Irma prep) I found the other half of the filter I bought

Spectre HPR 9332

This filter is big enough to make two.
