68 swing arm lateral movement shim

On examination of the swinging arm there seems to be excess lateral movement , I have ordered shims to correct the frame bracket gap. According to the workshop manual it involves the simple task of filing down the centre spacer tube. Anyone here had to do this mod and what were the results? The bushes seem ok but I think I will do them also when it is in bits anyway and while the rear wheel is off have a gander at the speedo drive, rear brake and change the rear sprocket.

Better if it all sits together ' unstressed ' , rather than the bolt pull it all into line .

If the O.E.M. bushes are A1 + I wouldnt replace em with non oroiginal ones , ior messwithit .

Hi Matt, cheers for that. I was thinking as it was in bits it might be as well swoping for new , but as you say maybe better just to leave them be, that's good.

I am needing a bit of clarity about " unstressed". The sleeves poke out over the end of the swing arm so it is solid in the centre and the swing arm mover latterly from some to side . The manual says to file the centre spacer and use washers to take up any slack. I think it has been like this possiblely from new? But it doesn't feel right to me , I was not going to be to severe with the file so as not to upset the chain alignment but I will post some photos and maybe you can cast your eye over them and see what you think, before I do any work on it.

After some deliberation I fitted new bobbins and greased it up and it seems fine , I would not say perfect but close enough for me. Greased up the wheel bearings as they are in good nick also. The speedo drive ( which I thought was past it upon dismantling it the gears were also pretty dam good only the centre ring had popped off, as the rivets were loose. Greased it up and popped the rivets back in and it is also good to go.





Chain guard needs some work and I ballsed up on the parts front need brake shoes and sprockets . My mudguard came back from the welders not perfect by any means but will have to suffice .

Also tried to order spare parts from Triumph in Germany (joe from Andover ), Rudolph diesel strasse no less but unfortunately he had made a bit of a cock up with the new system and they were out of stock, but thats the craic Jack . We will see if he gets them in when the due date arrives.

Cheers Nigel for the snaps , hard to see right enough. There was a 68 at the club meet Sunday. Didn't catch the owner but it was different in a good many ways chain guard being one of them (no skirt) . However spoke to wee Ally, a bit OCD on bonneville's and he cleared a few things up, but also muddied the waters a bit on the 70 machine , as to cams( need to get it road registered ASAP, before the rebuild . The morgo RT kit is just sitting along with the head and a few other bits 'n pieces. The 68 machine at the meet had the shield type reg plate holder and light and it looked tidy enough but just didn't have the style at the back as others on this forum.

Other things just no right either mudguard needs another small weld , may change the rear sprocket down to 43 tooth to knock some revs off , but will see how she goes stock first . Thanks again guys for the assistance . And to Nigel , you seem to have been over that machine in jig time, good show.

I had a couple of hold ups recently , changing the countershaft sprocket seal proved to an interesting little job. Colapsed the seal on the first attempt , on the second try I used two seals and battered it in and it took a fair bit of persuasion to get it to seat, the sprocket was badly worn but no harm for the age of her.

The mudguard was cracked badly and I took it to a engineers for welding as they a hard to replace and I wanted a decent job . There was about four cracks and four extra holes needing filled , it's on but not pretty .







But despite the setbacks and slow progress, you know what they say ........

Mudguard doesn't look too bad Jimmy and anyway, most of that area will be covered by the tail light and number plate assemblies.

I know , but I've got some flexi stick on rear number plates and I was thinking of running with them just for a giggle. You know just to see what happens!! And I would like her pretty in pink at the back for the summer camp. Your 68 is looking very well indeed, but I suspect and expect more to follow Nigel .
